Improving Highway Safety with Geospatial Technology

When the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) and Pennington County Highway Department selected Ferber Engineering Company, Inc (FEC) to complete the Pennington County Signing and Delineation Project, the FEC team got to work developing an approach that would maximize safety, efficiency, and objectivity. The resulting method utilized GPS, mobile imaging, digital ball-banking, and GIS to survey existing countywide signage, evaluate all horizontal curves, and produced a biddable set of design plans that bring the county’s signage into conformance with current criteria.
